Pétanque
HoEPA affiliated clubs
There are currently eight PE affiliated clubs in the HoEPA region. Becoming a member of one of these club and taking out a PE license provides you with a number of additional benefits. There is the opportunity to play in regional and national competitions. There is also coaching available for those wishing to add to their skills. PE members are also covered by insurance while engaged in many aspects of playing, practicing and social events directly related to pétanque.
Non-affiliated clubs
There are a number of non-affiliated clubs within the HoEPA region. Some confine their playing to internal social pétanque. Some others have formed groupings that play in local inter club competitions during the summer months. We are always keen to be made aware of these clubs and to offer our input from the region. Our wish would be to see these clubs join the wider pétanque family and derive the benefits of PE membership for both the club and their members.
Coaching and youth development
One of the main aims of the HoEPA is to encourage member’s to continually raise their skills in all aspects of the game. To help promote this development, there is a continual programme of coaching both within the clubs and at a regional level. It is by developing our member’s skills that we can compete successfully in regional competitions and see some of our members achieve national standards. The HoEPA aim is to have at least one PE qualified “Club Coach” in each club. Another important aim is to attract the next generation of players - they are our future. All the clubs in the region are keen to encourage new junior members and to help them enjoy the sport of pétanque.

Welcome to our fourth newsletter for the Heart of England region.
HoE Results
Over 50’s Pairs was won by Geoff Phillips (Hampton) and Neil Muddeman.
(Whitnash)
Closed Triples was won by Melanie Williams, Trevor Allen and Alistair
Rabbage. (Hereford)
Closed Pairs was won by Ross and Darren Woodward.(Whitnash)
All winners plus losing finalists will go forward to play in their respective
Champion of Champions later in the year.
HoE Success
A massive congratulations to Hannah Griffin (Whitnash) representing
England Ladies. She travelled to Torrevelaga in Spain earlier in June. The
Ladies Triples played extremely well and won the Nations Cup.
Hannah has now been selected to play for England in the European Pairs
Championships in early July in the Netherlands. I am sure we will wish her
the best of luck.
Well done to Jane Geddes (Coventry). Selected for England Juniors to play
in Valence (France). She played triples games against French and German
teams.
A great ambassador for English Junior Petanque.
Hannah Griffin, Glen Woodward and Carol Woodward (Whitnash) qualified
to represent England in the Home Nations later in the year. To be played
at Troon in Scotland. They will play teams from Scotland, Wales and
Jersey.
Other News
Other regional updates. After a successful coaching session at Solihull
back in April. The coaching team are looking at holding a session in
Hereford and then up at John Street/ Penkridge. Dates to be arranged.
On Tuesday 26
th
July. Hampton in Arden will host a key Baton changeover
leading up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The TV
cameras will be present.
To celebrate the arrival of the Baton The sports club will host a festival of
sport including Hockey, Cricket, Tennis, Squash, and Petanque.
Geoff is planning to hold a series of games throughout the day. It’s a great
opportunity to show the world what Petanque is. Obviously, we are trying
to reach out to new members, so there will also be a come and try
sessions.
Well done to both Hereford and Solihull Swifts on reaching the semi-final
stages of the Euro Cup. To be played on the 10
th
July.
After the West Midlands Summer League has ended, there will be a
Summer Triples. Barry Cox is in the process of organising the Competition.
On the 9/10
th
July, Coventry War Memorial Park are celebrating their
centenary. Tony Thompson is organising demonstrations of our sport. He
is still looking for volunteers to help him out. Contact Tony if you can

The region is still looking for a Junior Development Officer, and someone
to run the website. If you are interested in any of the above positions,
please speak to Geoff Phillips.

Coventry.
On the 26

June. We held the Alexandra Mixed Pairs. Eight teams
attended, and it was won by Brian Stote/ Sheila Eburn. Well done both of

Our Summer League is well under way. The league is made up of 18
teams. Games are two pairs v two pairs. We have around 120 registered
to play.
We are hoping to get some sessions going with the local cub/scout groups.
No firm dates yet. The tennis coaches run a sports camp during the
summer holidays. We shall be running some Petanque sessions there.
Hereford
Singles and Shooting 11

We are delighted that four teams will be representing the Inter Regional
Qualifiers at Lowestoft. 3 in the main, and one in the challenge. Some
members have travelled further afield to Leicester, Nottingham and
Gravesend to play in some bigger competitions. Recently there have been
a lot of Petanque miles travelled from this region.
John Street
We are holding a weekend of Petanque on the 16

will be a Triples comp. £10 per player. Restricted to 32 teams. Winners will
receive 30% of entrance fee +£300 from sponsor. On 17

we will hold a

all day.

Penkridge
www.penkridgepetanque.co.uk. Not much to report from here. We have
put a poster on to the HoE Facebook page. Detailing our club sessions.
Solihull
Due to a busy schedule, our closed events have been put off until the
Autumn. Our closed Summer League is nearing completion.
On the 17
th
May, 12 members visited Wilton Bridge, and enjoyed a 3-
round melee with our hosts providing lunch.
On the weekend of 18/19

June.13 members travelled to Cricklade
Petanque club (Great Western Region). We enjoyed some competitive
play. Our hosts came out on top over the two days. A reversal off fortunes
after we beat them in the Euro Cup back in November.
On the 13
th
August, we are visiting Bath Grand Cru for a friendly match.
We are delighted to have another Solihull Pair representing the region in
the IWD final at Whitnash. Gill Mathews/ Rosemarie Hughes.
We held an Open day on 11
th
June, when we had about a dozen potentials
turn up. So far, we have signed 3 new members, and are hopeful of a
couple more.
Stockton
Our open pairs on Easter Saturday was very successful, raising £112 jointly
for David Kimpton’s charity and Dianne Scott cancer charity.
We also held a very successful Jubilee melee and BBQ on 4
th
June.
Dave Hancox holds weekly coaching sessions for our newer members,
some of who are developing by leaps and bounds.
We have ambitious plans for developing our playing facilities, but the
priority for our host club (Stockton Football & Cricket Club) is the building
of changing rooms for our Netball teams and disabled toilet facilities.
Whitnash Windmill
Thanks to our successful RUCIS grants, the work on our terrain is now
complete. Two new wooden shelters have been constructed to further
enhance our facilities.
We are organizing a Whitnash Weekender on 3
rd
/4
th
September, where we
will be holding a Ladies Pairs on Saturday, and a Mixed Pairs on Sunday.
There will be some top players in attendance, so if you are interested,
please contact Hannah for the Ladies Pairs and Glen for the Mixed.
Wilton Bridge
We completed the sleeper frame for 5 further pistes, bringing our total to
11. We researched the best grit to put down, and settled on Horticultural
grit. There was a great deal of Barrowing and spreading, but the result is
good.
We have arranged friendlies with Abergavenny, Peterchurch and Solihull,
but our members don’t appear to be motivated to commit themselves to
more regular competitions, either locally or regionally at the moment.
Perhaps we will feel the need in the future.

Welcome to our fourth newsletter for the Heart of England region.
HoE Results
Over 50’s Pairs was won by Geoff Phillips (Hampton) and Neil
Muddeman. (Whitnash)
Closed Triples was won by Melanie Williams, Trevor Allen and Alistair
Rabbage. (Hereford)
Closed Pairs was won by Ross and Darren Woodward.(Whitnash)
All winners plus losing finalists will go forward to play in their respective
Champion of Champions later in the year.
HoE Success
A massive congratulations to Hannah Griffin (Whitnash) representing
England Ladies. She travelled to Torrevelaga in Spain earlier in June.
The Ladies Triples played extremely well and won the Nations Cup.
Hannah has now been selected to play for England in the European
Pairs Championships in early July in the Netherlands. I am sure we will
wish her the best of luck.
Well done to Jane Geddes (Coventry). Selected for England Juniors to
play in Valence (France). She played triples games against French and
German teams.
A great ambassador for English Junior Petanque.
Hannah Griffin, Glen Woodward and Carol Woodward (Whitnash)
qualified to represent England in the Home Nations later in the year. To
be played at Troon in Scotland. They will play teams from Scotland,
Wales and Jersey.
Other News
Other regional updates. After a successful coaching session at Solihull
back in April. The coaching team are looking at holding a session in
Hereford and then up at John Street/ Penkridge. Dates to be arranged.
On Tuesday 26
th
July. Hampton in Arden will host a key Baton
changeover leading up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in
Birmingham. The TV cameras will be present.
To celebrate the arrival of the Baton The sports club will host a festival
of sport including Hockey, Cricket, Tennis, Squash, and Petanque.
Geoff is planning to hold a series of games throughout the day. It’s a
great opportunity to show the world what Petanque is. Obviously, we
are trying to reach out to new members, so there will also be a come
and try sessions.
Well done to both Hereford and Solihull Swifts on reaching the semi-
final stages of the Euro Cup. To be played on the 10
th
July.
After the West Midlands Summer League has ended, there will be a
Summer Triples. Barry Cox is in the process of organising the
Competition.
On the 9/10
th
July, Coventry War Memorial Park are celebrating their
centenary. Tony Thompson is organising demonstrations of our sport.
He is still looking for volunteers to help him out. Contact Tony if you

The region is still looking for a Junior Development Officer, and
someone to run the website. If you are interested in any of the above
positions, please speak to Geoff Phillips.

Coventry.

June. We held the Alexandra Mixed Pairs. Eight teams
attended, and it was won by Brian Stote/ Sheila Eburn. Well done both
